There are many different reasons a drain in your home could clog, and none of them are fun to deal with. Slimy, wet, pungent, sticky messes in your bathtub or on your floor are the last thing you’d want to deal with on a nice evening. Fortunately, most clogs can be easily remedied without the need for a professional plumber, and a little preventative effort can keep clogs from recurring.
In the Bathroom
Common clogs in the bathtub are caused by dirt and hair running down the drain as we wash. This debris can bind to soap scum and block the drain entirely. Removing the drain stopper, using a plunger to create a vacuum, or removing the elbow of the drain pipe are the usual remedies for a clogged bathtub drain.
Toilet clogs are usually caused by flushing feminine hygiene products, paper other than toilet paper, and pre-moistened diaper wipes. These materials do not break down like toilet paper, and can clog the lines that carry water from your toilet to the sewer system. Even something as small as a cotton swab can block the line and collect more debris, eventually leading to a clogged toilet. A plunger is the most common remedy, although more stubborn clogs may require a drain auger (often called a “snake”).
In the Kitchen:
Kitchen sink drains are generally caused from dirt, soap scum, food particles, and grease. As grease travels through the drain and cools, it becomes hard and can clog in the P-Trap, preventing the flow of water and debris. If food particles cause recurring clogs, installing a garbage disposal unit can help remedy this problem.
