In the plumbing business, you hear many different stories on how plumbing fixtures and systems should be treated or cared for. There are a few common myths that circulate online, everything form what can help your garbage disposal to how to appropriately clean your fixtures. While plumbing myths are usually harmless, we have found some that may end up costing you in the long run and therefore need dispelling. We have compiled a list of the top myths for you below!
Plumbing Myths Debunked
- Myth #1: Anything and everything can go down your garbage disposal… As long as you run your tap at the same time.
As many are beginning to discover, your garbage disposal is a great deal more sensitive than initially believed. Bones, banana peels, and even eggshells can damage the blades and render it inoperable, even with water running. Be careful what you decide to put down your disposal.
- Myth #2 : Just about everything is flush-able.
Just because disposable cleaning wipes, cat litter, cigarette butts, and trash disappear when you flush the toilet, it does not mean that is where they belong. These items are usually not biodegradeable and may even gum up your works further down the line. This leads to back ups and other toilet problems. Dispose of all things appropriately.
- Myth #3: Plumbing fixtures, such as faucets, do not really require any maintenance.
This plumbing myth is somewhat astounding. Maintenance keeps all of your plumbing healthy and running perfectly. Sometimes people avoid this, opting for more home grown remedies. A prime example is tightening your faucet to stop a drip and thinking that is the solution. However, what you may not know is that the reason for the drip is a washer within the faucet itself. Tightening and ignoring the problem can lead to an excess of damage that will lead to a costly replacement down the line. Always have a plumber inspect your fixtures when a problem arises to save yourself in the long run.
- Myth #4: As long as it’s draining, there is no drain problem.
Drain clogs are usually something that builds up over time. While your drain may still function, you should have inspections to ensure it continues to run. If you notice your water draining slower, it’s time for maintenance.
